Review: Black Blood (Black Bloods #1) by John Hennessy

Title: Black Blood
Author: John Hennessy
Series: Black Bloods #1

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N
Vampires, werewolves, witches, magic—no one in the Sanctuary, home of the survivors of the nuclear apocalypse, believes in such imaginary creations, including Aberdeen Dareday. That is until the day Abby wakes up with black veins bulging under her skin. The day she learns everything she’s been told about the world is a lie. Forced to flee humanity’s last refuge because of her abnormality, and the corpses left in its unexplainable wake, she finds herself on the run in an entirely new world. A world in which darkness reigns, full of supernatural creatures bent on her execution.

When all seems lost and facing certain death, Abby is saved by Ash, a quiet yet striking young man who shares her black blood, and her mysterious powers. After Ash reveals a clue regarding an old witch, they head north to her home in Montana, determined to beat the piling odds and obtain the answers they seek. Now hunted by everyone from vengeful humans, to the alluring vampire Prince of Texas, to the Lord Alpha of the largest werewolf pack ever to exist, Abby must discover what is so special about her black blood if she hopes to live and fight another day, but time stands against them as their enemies close in for the kill.
Black blood is the first book I read by John Hennessy. Since I read the blurb of the book I couldn’t wait to read it.

Aberdeen Dareday lives in a post apocalyptic earth where the survivors of the nuclear apocalypse live in a Sanctuary. The Sanctuary provides life to the few survivors of the apocalypse or so they have been told. No one dares leave the safety of the sanctuary. If the harsh conditions won’t kill them then the radiation surely will. When Abby wakes up with black veins she knows she will have to flee the sanctuary or else she is as good as dead.

What awaits her outside is fat from the destruction she thought she would find. Abby is on the run away from anything familiar and alone to face the truth, she is abnormal, a black blood. So when she is saved by Ash, Abby isn’t shocked to learn that vampires, werewolves and even witches are real. What Abby can’t figure out is why everyone wants her blood.

Black blood is as dark as the title suggests. There are so many paranormal creatures in this post apocalyptic world. Abby and Ash have a long journey ahead in order to get the answers they seek and the paranormals aren’t their only enemy. The humans living outside of the sanctuary want Abby dead as well.

Abby was a very well developed character but she was really naïve. The only reason she had survived this long is because she had Jasper in the beginning and then Ash. Of course as Abby learner to embrace her gifts she became powerful enough to protect herself, which was really cool.

I would like to say that there was romance between Abby and Ash but even if there was I didn’t pick it up. Ash was a great know-it-all kind of a guy which came in handy since he grew up in a post apocalyptic world. There is something between them but it wasn’t emphasized much in this book. Maybe we will see more of them in the sequel. However there was a spark between Abby and Jasper, whom I really liked, but it’s complicated since Jasper gets out of the picture as soon as Ash comes in.

Black blood was a nice combination of action, twists, mystery, the paranormal and aliens all set in a post apocalyptic world. I would have liked to see more romance but Abby had a lot in her plate as it was.

I had a lot of fun following Abby on her journey to find answers and I’ll definitely read the sequel to see what Abby plans to do now that she has them.

I definitely recommend it!
