Amnesia
Cambria Hebert
Publication date: June 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
I washed ashore in a little lake town.
A place where everyone knows everyone, yet…
No one knows me.
I don’t know me.
If a woman doesn’t know her own name, does she really exist?
I don’t know my natural hair color, my birthdate, or where I live.
I am invisible.
To everyone, to everything, even to myself.
Except to him.
I see the recognition deep in his stare, the way it lingers on my face as if I’m a puzzle he’s desperate to put together.
I just want answers, the truth… knowledge.
His lips are sealed. Still, his eyes beguile me.
I can’t trust anyone, not even myself. Someone wants me dead, the same someone who tried to bury me in a watery grave.
They’ll come for me again… I won’t know their face.
I don’t even know mine.
I am amnesia.
EXCERPT:
Slivers of light pricked my eyelids, which up until this moment seemed far too heavy to lift. As I lay against something soft at my back, thought and awareness barely registered.
The gritty feeling as I struggled to raise my eyelids scraped and burned over my eyeballs as if warning me it wasn’t a good idea. Swallowing past the sandpaper in my throat, I stopped working and lay still. Cognizance slowly came forward in the form of something weighing me down and the echo of footsteps nearby.
Adrenaline jackknifed through me, and my body arched upward with the force of my gasp. The weight of whatever held me caused severe panic to fill me, and I began to fight against it.
“No!” I screamed, flailing about, trying to escape the binds. “Let me go!”
High-pitched beeping filled my ears, and the footsteps I’d heard grew more insistent and much closer.
He was coming!
“No!” I screamed.
Strong hands grabbed my arms and pinned me down. I tried to fight back, but they were much stronger than me. Kicking my legs, I tried to free them, but even more weight came down, holding them still until I was gasping for breath and ready to beg.
“Please!” I pleaded as wetness coated my cheeks. It made me realize the grittiness under my lids was rinsed away, and my eyes sprang open.
A man was leaning over me. He had graying hair and wore some kind of white shirt. The scream that ripped right out of me scared us both.
More hands and voices came out of nowhere, and I thrashed around again.
“Miss!” the man yelled. “Miss, calm down.”
“Get away from me!” I screamed again.
“Miss!” another voice yelled, a woman this time. Turning in her direction, I saw a pair of kind brown eyes staring at me. “We aren’t trying to hurt you.”
I calmed some, but the thundering of my heart made me feel as if I might spiral out of control. “You aren’t?”
“No.” The woman, who was also dressed in white, spoke. “You’re at a hospital. You were in an accident.”
“W-what?” I stammered, collapsing back against the bed, no longer straining against the binds.
“You’re at a hospital.”
“You’re trying to hold me down!” I accused.
“We don’t want you to hurt yourself.” the woman explained. The hands, even the man’s, remained.
“I don’t like it,” I admitted, recoiling.
The man straightened, stepping back. The nurse was slower to withdraw, but she did so after a few seconds.
“My legs,” I rasped. Suddenly, my throat hurt.
“It’s just the blankets.”
A quick glance down proved I was covered with blankets. Between suspicious glances at the people crowding my room (there were four), I gazed around, concluding I was in fact in a hospital.
“I don’t understand,” I admitted, all my weight pressing into the bed.
“It’s okay,” the man replied. He was a doctor, with a name badge and a stethoscope. “It’s completely normal and expected to be confused after the ordeal you’ve been through.”
“What ordeal?” I asked instantly, anxiety pressing in on my ribcage.
“We were hoping you could tell us,” the doctor said.
“What?” My brows furrowed.
The nurse leaned close, over the side of the bed. I noticed the railings were pulled up on each side. It made me feel as if I were in jail. Instantly, I hated it and began shoving at the bars, trying to push them down.
“Okay, hang on,” the nurse said and put the rails down. Once it was done, she pinned me with an insistent stare. “You have to stay still. You can’t thrash around. You’ll rip out your IV and reinjure yourself.”
“What happened to me?” I asked for what felt like the fifteenth time. I looked around at the four people in the room, hoping one of them would just spit it out.
The doctor motioned to two of the nurses and then quietly left the room.
I glanced back at the nurse. “Can you tell us your name?” she asked.
“My name?” I nodded once, then opened my mouth… only nothing came out.
Anxiety spiked in me again; I started to become agitated. “I… don’t know.”
“Calm down.” The nurse reminded me.
How dare she tell me to calm down? I couldn’t even remember my name.
Oh my God, I didn’t know my own name!
“I don’t remember!” I gasped, jerking up into a sitting position. “Why can’t I remember?”
Before I could fling the covers off and jump out of bed, the doctor was there, pinning me back down. “If you don’t calm down, we’ll have to sedate you. I don’t want to do that. You’ve been out long enough.”
I stilled. “How long?”
“A while.” The nurse hedged.
I ignored her. She was terrible with questions. “How long?” I demanded.
“A little over two months,” the doctor replied.
I gasped. “What’s my name?” I yelled.
I’d been here for two months and they were asking for my name? Shouldn’t they know it?
The doctor wasn’t looking at me; he was looking at the nurse, giving her a curt nod. She rushed out of the room.
“No!” I shouted. “No drugs! Please! Tell me my name. I just want to know my name.”
“You need to calm down. You’ve had a great deal of trauma, miss.”
I dropped back against the pillow, boneless. He called me miss. “You don’t know my name, do you?” I asked, meek.
Sensing all my energy was drained away, he moved back. A frown pulled at his lips. “You were brought in with no identification.” He began.
Fear unlike anything I’d ever felt wrapped around my heart and squeezed. I searched every corner of my mind for something. Anything.
There was nothing.
“I don’t remember…” I whispered.
The doctor seemed to soften. “I know this must be very scary, to wake up and be so disoriented.”
I laughed, but it wasn’t a humorous sound. I wished I were disoriented right then.
“You’ve been through a lot. Give it a few days. Now that you’re awake, your mind will catch up and you will remember.”
“I will?” I asked.
“There’s a good chance.”
Disappointment speared me. “If I don’t?”
“Let’s take it one day at a time.” He placated me.
“Easy for you to say. You know your name.”
A ghost of a smile appeared on his face. “Time.” He reminded me.
The nurse came through the door, holding a syringe, and I cringed away.
“I don’t think we’re going to need that,” the doctor told her.
I let out an audible sigh.
He glanced around again. “Now that you’re awake, I’ll get you down for testing.”
“What kind of testing?” I asked.
“Routine stuff for someone who’s been in a coma.”
Nothing about this was routine. I was in coma… for two months. And I didn’t even know my name.
When both the nurse and doctor were gone and I was alone, my eyes overflowed with tears and a formidable feeling of dread crowded inside me. The doctor said there was “a good chance” I would remember my name very soon.
The problem was it wasn’t just my name I needed to remember…
It was everything.

THE BLOOD BROTHERS SERIES

DEADLY SILENCE, #1

LETHAL LIES, #2

TWISTED TRUTHS, #3

Review

5 Stars!!!

The second book in the Blood Brothers series is already out!!!

Anya is a professor of criminal psychology but when she finds herself the target of a serial killer, she goes to the only person she trusts to help her, her sister. When her sister, an FBI agent is taken and murdered, Anya blames herself for her death as she I the one who put her in the Copper Killer’s path. But when Anya meets Heath, a private investigator who was supposedly helping her sister with the case, she makes an impulse choice that could ruined them all.

Heath did not expect Anya to provoke the killer and drag him into a fake relationship, but the damage has been done. With their identities exposed, the brothers are now vulnerable. The people after them won’t hesitate to capture or even worse kill them and those they love. The brothers will have to find the killer and elude their enemies in order to survive.

Lethal Lies was an incredible addition to the series. Somewhere between their efforts to find the killer and evade their enemies, Heath and Anya’s relationship develops and what started as a bait to lure the Copper Killer, turns into something real. I loved the way that Zanetti combined the action, suspense and mystery with the romantic aspect of the book. We also get to see the Grey brothers in action *throws confetti* a pretty short scene but a definitely satisfying one. I wish we get to see some more of them before the series ends.

I’m super excited for Denver and Noni’s book, Twisted Truths (out in November), especially after the little hint at the end of this book. I can’t wait for it!!!

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the first book I read in the series and it can definitely be read as a standalone!

I knew I’d like the book just by reading the blurb. Clara is the daughter of a mafia boss. Three years ago she and her sister, Honor, managed to escape from him and his plans for them. But everything comes at a price and their freedom cost a life. Despite the violence and cruelty around them, Clara and Giovanni knew that their stolen time would come to an end but neither expected what was to come!

Fast forward 3 years and the two sisters haven’t wasted Giovanni’s sacrifice. Well-hidden and safe, they have created new lives for themselves. Clara is doing what she loves, living an ordinary life but she’s far from happy. She can’t stop thinking about Giovanni and what they had. So when Giovanni kidnaps her, informing her that he is the mafia boss now, Clara knows that the boy she once loved is truly gone!

Hold you against me was really good! I didn’t really connect with the characters but the plot was really good. I loved how the story was set up. We got see Clara’s new life and then bits and pieces from her past with Giovanni but we also got to hear how the sisters and Giovanni managed to survive. It was awesome! Of course there was some drama and action but the main focus is these two characters. We also got to see glimpses of Honor’s life with Kip and some others characters from the previous books in the series!

I don’t know if this is the last book in the series but it was a great ending!

Excerpt

Something moves me gently, constant and rhythmic like waves. I’m warm. There’s something soft curling around my arms, wrapped inside my fists. Padding beneath my cheek that smells like home.

An unnatural darkness weighs down on me, keeping me from waking up—a demon’s whisper in my ear. You’re warm, you’re safe. Sleep.

But something is wrong.

I remember falling asleep, so suddenly, remember drinking water that I hadn’t filled. And I remember the phone call from Amy telling me that Giovanni’s alive. Impossible.

Awareness pricks my skin like a cold breeze. Wherever I am, I’m not alone.

I blink rapidly, forcing my eyes open. They adjust to the darkness quickly, taking in the tinted windows on either side and the wide leather bench curving beneath me. I’m in a car. A limo, to be exact. And it’s moving.

On the opposite side of the long space, a large body reclines. I can see the wide stance of his legs, the pale white of his shirt. A suit jacket tossed beside his hip. His face is hidden in the shadows of the vehicle.

I was raised by the head of the Las Vegas mafia, the capo. I grew up around guns and violence, so I know when a man is armed. It’s the way he holds himself, the warning shimmering around him like a dark halo.

This man is armed and extremely dangerous.

Every muscle in my body tenses. My mind still swims in thick water, because I must have been drugged. He drugged me, this faceless man. Why did he take me? It won’t be anything good, that’s for sure.

Even worse, I suspect this has something to do with my past, with my family. It’s messed up that I’d rather be taken by some random psycho. But at least then I’d have a chance of getting away.

“Who are you?” I demand, my voice hoarse from whatever drugs they gave me.

There’s a long pause, the weight of his regard as heavy as a finger trailing down my neck.

“Have I really changed that much, bella, that you don’t recognize me?”

About the Author

Once upon a time a little girl told her grandmother that when she grew up she wanted to be a writer. Or a lollipop lady. Or a fairy princess fireman. ‘Write, Megan,’ her grandmother advised. So that’s what she did. Thirty-odd years later, Megan is a professional writer and published author by day, and an indie novelist by night. Her fiction – young adult romance with soul – recently earned her the SPR’s Independent Woman Author of the Year award. Megan grew up in the Royal County, a hop, skip and a (very long) jump from Windsor Castle, but these days she makes her home in the village of Standish, Greater Manchester. She lives with her husband, a proud Scot who occasionally kicks back in a kilt; her son, a budding artist with the soul of a palaeontologist; and her baby daughter, a keen pan-and-spoon drummer who sings in her sleep. When she's not writing, you'll find her walking someplace green, reading by the fire, or creating carnage in the kitchen as she pursues her impossible dream: of baking something edible.

Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Torn is the fourth book in the LOST series and tells the story of Victoria and Wade, of the team members!

Victoria and Wade are partners but in the last book, Shattered, we saw them come closer. In Torn the chemistry between them explodes! Victoria may be an intelligent, brilliant woman but she is a woman with secrets and she cannot allow anyone to know them. To keep her secrets hidden, Victoria keeps everyone at distance, even her friends at LOST but Wade has had enough. After almost losing her in Shattered, he refuses to let her push him away. When a new case takes them to Savannah and Victoria’s past is questioned, she knows she will have to trust Wade even if it means revealing her secrets.

Torn was amazing and super-HOT! Victoria and Wade’s relationship built up really quickly but it was only expected considering their feelings developed in the previous book! Moreover, I think I’m not wrong when I say that this is NOT the end of the series. Eden adds two new members in the LOST team, Asher and his twin sister, Anna. The twins have their own secrets and I can’t wait to read their stories!

I really liked this book but I’d have loved to catch up with some of the previous couples as well, especially Gabe and Eve. Maybe we will get a chance in the next book!

Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG! I’ve been waiting so long (okay not that long, but it did feel like it!) for Bas and Myst’s story!

Five years ago Bas and Myst created the most amazing child ever, Molly. Unfortunately, Must had to give up her daughter and has been on the run ever since. Bas, a notorious assassin, still cannot understand how Myst was able to abandon their daughter. Molly, is his greatest achievement and treasure and he will allow no one to harm her, not even her own mother. After Molly’s abduction, Myst knows she can no longer stay away. She already gave up on Molly once and she’s not strong enough to do it again. With her enemies getting closer, Myst will have to risk it all if it means spending time with her daughter!

This is my favorite book in the series so far. I just loved it soooooo much! Myst was so secretive, for a good reason too, and Bas was just determined to find out the truth. And in the middle of them, Molly. She was ADORABLE. I really liked the fact that Bas still cared for Myst even after he though she was irresponsible and heartless for abandoning her daughter.

I really, really loved Bas and Myst and Molly and the surprises at the end was just perfect (is it too much to ask for a novella? A small one pretty please?) However, Blood lust offers more than just a romance. There is action, suspense, twists and lots of testosterone. I really liked Kaede, Bas’ right hand, Lana, aka the Mave, and Wolfe, the leader of the Sentinels. The chemistry between Lana and Wolfe was off the charts and I really can’t wait to see how that will work out!

I don’t know who is next, either Kaede or Lana & Wolfe’s story but I loved Blood lust and I’d really like to see more of Bas, Myst and their family.

Excerpt

He looked . . . offended.

“You didn’t tell me you were a telepath.”

She shrugged. “You didn’t ask.”

“You applied for a job. I assumed you would have shared your complete resume.” He leaned down, wrapping her in the scent of clean male skin and scotch. “Or were you keeping secrets even back then?”

His lips brushed the top of her ear, sending streaks of lightning through her body.

Danger, excitement, and pure lust twisted her stomach into a knot.

Dammit. She’d spent the past four years isolated in the bowels of a Russian monastery. She wasn’t prepared to deal with the cascade of sensations.

She struggled to suck air into her lungs. “I wasn’t a telepath when I applied for the job,” she said in hoarse tones.

He frowned, his fingers resuming their absent path up and down her arm. Was he even aware of what he was doing?

Her skin shivered with delight.

“Is that supposed to be a joke?” he demanded.

She grimaced, understanding his annoyance. High-bloods were born with their mutations, even if some didn’t reveal themselves until after puberty. Most people only had one, but a rare few could claim a combination.

Like Bas, who’d been born with both the magic of a witch and the superior strength of a Sentinel. And even more rare were those powers that appeared later in life, seemingly out of nowhere.

None of the healers had an explanation.

It simply happened.

“The talent didn’t reveal itself until I was pregnant,” she grudgingly confessed.

He lifted his head, genuine amazement in his eyes. “A spontaneous manifestation?”

“Yes.”

He studied her with a searing intensity. “Fine. You should have told me you were in contact with Molly.”

She forced herself to hold that raptor gaze. Bas was a natural leader with a male confidence that easily intimidated others.

In other words . . . an arrogant ass.

He would run her over completely if she didn’t try to stand her ground.

“As I said, you’re not my boss.”

“No, but I am Molly’s father.”

“I know that—” she started to snap, only to bite her tongue. Well, hell.

He was right.

“And?” he prompted.

She grimaced. It was true he was an arrogant ass, but he’d taken in a baby that he hadn’t known existed, without question and without hesitation, and surrounded her with the sort of love every little girl deserved.

As much as it might pain her to stroke his bloated ego, she owed him her eternal gratitude.

“I’m truly appreciative that you’ve done such a wonderful job with Molly.” She managed to force the words past her stiff lips. “She’s a very special little girl and I know that you had a very large part in that.”

He blinked, a flare of color staining the sharp line of his cheekbones.

Had she managed to knock him off guard?

Amazing.

Then his lips abruptly thinned. “You’re very good at deflecting my questions,” he accused.

She dropped her gaze to his thousand-dollar Italian shoes. “Then stop asking them.”

“Myst.” His finger curled beneath her chin, tilting her head up. “Why didn’t you let me know you were in contact with my daughter?”

A fresh pain sliced through her heart. “Our daughter,” she corrected in fierce tones.

His lips parted, but before he could deny her right to be a mother, Molly’s plaintive voice interrupted their tense confrontation.

“Daddy, I want Mommy to tell the story.”

Myst glanced toward the tiny girl who was perched on the edge of the bed before returning her wary gaze to the predator who was nearly vibrating with the urge to toss her through the nearest window.

“Let me go to her, Bas,” she said in low tones. “Please.”

Frustration tightened his stark features, but dropping his hands, he forced himself to take a step back.

“Tell her the story. Then we talk,” he warned, turning his head to send his daughter a smile that held uncomplicated affection. “Good night, pet.”

Bas stalked from the room, his phone pressed to his ear as he reached the main room of the suite.

“Kaede,” he snapped as soon as his enforcer picked up. “I need you in Kansas City. I’ll explain when you get here.”

He shoved the phone back into his pocket and paced to the bank of windows that overlooked the Kansas City skyline.

Unfucking believable.

After five years of paying a fortune to trackers, witches, and even a human private investigator to hunt down Myst, she waltzes into his penthouse as if she had every right to be there.

Worse, he discovered that she’d been in constant contact with Molly.

A short, humorless laugh was wrenched from his throat.

No, that wasn’t the worst.

The worst was the undeniable fact that he found her just as damned exquisite as the first time she’d sashayed that tiny body into his office.

His fingers had twitched with the urge to run through the moonlit silk of her hair. To yank off her pretty sundress and explore the pale ivory skin that had haunted his dreams. To crush the soft curve of her lips until they parted in help-less surrender.

Emotions are the enemy.

He’d been taught that by the monks who’d honed him into the perfect killer.

But Myst managed to shatter a lifetime of training, stir-ring his passions with an ease that was frankly terrifying.

He needed her gone.

Now.
