Return to Poughkeepsie by Debra Anastasia
Series: Poughkeepsie #2
Book 1: Poughkeepsie
Release Date: December 30th 2013

Beckett Taylor is a murderer. His calling, his craft are destruction and intimidation—whether he wants it that way now or not. He left Poughkeepsie to keep his brothers safe, to keep Eve safe. Set up with happy lives to live, they’re better off without him, right?

But all his willpower crumbles when he hears his brother Blake’s frantic voice on the phone. An unknown enemy has moved in on his old territory, and Livia’s been taken. In an instant, Beckett knows it will take an attack only he and Eve can execute to bring her back. All his self-imposed embargoes are torn to shreds, perhaps along with the new man he’s struggled to become.

“Brother, call Eve. I’ll be there soon.”

In this emotional and action-packed sequel to Poughkeepsie, Debra Anastasia conjures a tale of love at its most raw and ragged. With Beckett and Eve, how could we expect anything less? But even when it’s messy, not magical, true love perseveres. Real love finds a way—for better or for worse until death does part.

Review

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“She loved him, and it hurt her.”

“I'm not worth your heart yet, but I'm gonna be. Eve, the next time you see me, I'm going to be a man worth it.”

When I read Poughkeepsie I fell in love with Livia and Blake and with their family as well. I loved everyone in that book. This book made no difference!!!

In Poughkeepsie Blake's brother, Beckett sacrifised everything in order to save his family and had to run away. Now the time has come for Beckett Taylor to Returns To Poughkeepsie heal and once again help the ones he loves.

I loved this book. It was freaking magnificent, wonderful, spectacular, remarkable. In most books our hero is usually that, a hero. He's the "good" guy, honorable with morals and so on. Beckett may not be those things but he's definitely a hero in his own way. He has fought and keeps fighting anything that endangers his family. He's honorable(well mostly!), he lives by the rules he makes, he's an "Alpha", a protector and he wouldn't hesitate to sacrifice anything and everything for his family. For him family is EVERYTHING!

In this book we get to meet new chracters but also see how the characters we already know are doing. We get introduced to Ryan Morales (who btw I loved) and his ex, Trish (who I wanted to murder)and Mary Ellen (that b**** is soooooo dead). We also got to see Cole and Kyle, who were a bigger part of this book, and I was so sorry for them (they had fertility problems) and Blake and Livia, who were such an incredible couple.

All in all I highly recommend this series. It has drama, action, passion, humor and it's sooooo unpredictable.

“Damn it, Eve. Why’d you come here? Why are you here?” He was suspicious, hurt, sexual. He stepped behind his couch, giving them both a barrier.

“I don’t know. I couldn’t stop myself.”

Looking forward to reading more!

About The Author

Debra Anastasia is busy, just like every other mom. There’s dinner, the dogs, the two kids, the two kids, and her ongoing battle with…ahem… digestive issues, which combined with her adolescent boy sense of humor makes for colorful and sometimes cringe-worthy social media updates. Her first love and crowning achievement is her thriving career as the weirdest mom on the block.
Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when–along with the animals and humans in her house–the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra’s ear. Insomnia was the gateway to plots that wouldn’t give up, wouldn’t let go. Now they stalk her everywhere. Halfway through making lunches, a twist takes hold and–fingers full of peanut butter–she finds somewhere, anywhere to write it down.

She’s eternally grateful to Omnific Publishing, which has now published four of her books: two in the Seraphim Series and two in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series, as well as her novella, Late Night with Andres. That one is special because 100% of the proceeds go to breast cancer research. (So go get it right now, please!) She also very much appreciates her open-minded readers, who embrace everything she has to offer, with a focus on anti-heroes and bathroom humor.

Debra lives in Maryland with her family. You can find her at DebraAnastasia.com and on Twitter @Debra_Anastasia. But be prepared.

Exception by Patty Maximini
Publication date: November 2nd 2013
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

When all hope for moving on from a life filled with pain and abuse was gone, Emily Watson closed herself off to the world, packed her bags, and moved across the country in search of a new life. What she found was a career she adored and friends she loved. It wasn’t a full and complete life, but it was definitely better than what she knew before.

When all hope for being loved and accepted for who he was instead of what he had was gone, Taylor Carter decided that trusting people outside of his family wasn’t really smart and would only lead to disappointment. With his world turned upside down, his life became about his work, and every new relationship was meaningless and superficial. He was safe and definitely content but never truly happy.

When all hope for staying awake during a long day was gone, Emily and Taylor found themselves at the same coffee cart. Little did they know then that the worst coffee they’d ever had would forever change their lives.

When hopeless people are blinded by an endless pain, when contentment and safety feel like the best options, and when love seems impossible, they may just find an exception.

Excerpt
“Tay . . . ” she whispered in a plea. Using the hand she had on his belly, she pushed herself away from him and skated as fast as she could towards the wooden deck.

By the time she reached it, flurries of snow were falling around her and a few tears were slipping from her eyes. She could hear his blades making their way through the ice, but she couldn’t make herself turn around to look at him.

“Ems, if I crossed any lines here, I’m so sorry.”

The pain in his voice nearly broke her. For the first time in their friendship, he was seriously upset, and as much as she wanted to, she couldn’t comfort him. Anger at herself and at the situation they were in heated everything inside of her. “You didn’t,” she whispered angrily.

Taylor reached for her hand, but before he touched it Emily let out a heavy breath and continued. “You didn’t cross any lines, because we don’t have them anymore. We’re just a big, messy, blur.”

“Then talk to me, Emily.” Despite his frustration, his voice was kind and loving.

Her head bowed low and, when she spoke, her voice was extremely weak. “I don’t even know what to say. That’s why I came here. I needed to think and whenever you’re around I can’t.”

“And?”

She shook her head, letting out a humorless laugh.

Favorite food?

Lobster

Favorite color?

Emerald green

Favorite band and / or favorite song?

I love classic rock, and it's super hard to pick out one band, forget one song, so I'll go with my current favorite: Imagine Dragons.

How do you come up with your book ideas?

Usually a character just pops into my head and starts telling me a story, but sometimes it's a song lyric, or something I overhear someone say, or a line from a TV show or movie.

What’s the best prank you’ve ever played on someone?

Me and my high school lab partner in chemistry went out of our way to blow stuff up, so we broke a lot of beakers and test tubes over the course of the year. Our teacher gave us a bill at the end of the year for something like forty bucks...so we brought it all in loose pennies and dumped them on her desk.

What’s your fascination with cops and detectives?

There is just something innately alpha about them. They don't take any crap, and there are lines that they can never cross.

What’s the thing you love most about Needing Her?

Getting to revisit some of my favorite characters and give them the happy ending they deserve.

Movie Poster: The Fault In Our Stars

Posted on Thursday, December 19, 2013 11:00 AM

"The Fault In Our Stars" isn't out until next summer but we're already weeping into our cuffs after seeing the movie's official poster. The tagline? "One Sick Love Story." And... we're going to need a moment.

The poster for the flick, part of the YA-book-to-movie craze, surfaced Wednesday (December 18) via Project For Awesome, which is offering up posters for $25, all of which goes to charity. It features stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort (both also slated to appear in YA adaptation "Divergent") lying face to face, Woodley sporting a breathing tube.

In the film, Woodley plays Hazel Grace, a teen cancer patient who falls in love in a Cancer Kid Support Group.
The film is likely to be one of the biggest tearjerkers of 2014 — at least if the poster and script are any indications. "I cried like five times reading that script," Sam Trammell, who plays Hazel Grace's father, told MTV News. "It's really faithful to the book, and I think a lot of fans are really going to appreciate that. It's gorgeous and sad, too. I spent a lot of time crying."

We've got our sleeves and tissues at the ready.

The flick opens on June 6, 2014.

Excerpt

“I gladly sacrifice my life for the good of others. One life will make the difference, and that life could be mine. For this reason, I’m devoted to finding the cure.” I said the words out loud, but I wasn’t thinking about them. A couple of squirrels chasing each other held my attention more securely than the pledge we’d been forced to say since kindergarten. By tenth grade, the thing had lost all meaning.

I sat back down among the rows of desks, still eyeing the squirrels. I folded one of my legs under me and let the other one swing. At five foot three, I wasn’t the tallest member of my class, but I wasn’t the shortest either. My violet eyes followed the dance of the squirrels while I toyed absently with a lock of my jet-black hair.
My teacher was blabbing about our latest reading assignment, but those dang squirrels were so cute I couldn’t focus on her.

“Macey?”

I turned to face her. She was one of the younger members of the faculty, but dressed to try and fit in. Her loose-fitting floral print blouse was tucked into her high-waisted navy skirt. She stared at me over half-glasses perched at the end of her nose. I imagined she referred to them as spectacles and liked to put the end of them into her mouth while pondering literary stuff.

“Hmm?” I asked.

“Care to answer the question?”

I glanced out the window to curse the squirrels, but they were gone. “Could you repeat the question?”
She half-smiled as she leaned against the front of her desk, knowing she’d caught me. “Certainly. Why do you think Billy has a stutter?”

“Oh jeeze, I don’t know. I didn’t understand a single page of this book, Mrs. Whitehead.” A few snickers escaped from some of my classmates. “Hey, guys, don’t throw me under the bus here! I couldn’t have been the only one who didn’t get anything from this!”
A few faces turned to Mrs. Whitehead and nodded. “Look, I know this was the shortest thing we’ve read so far, but it was all moon language to me. Quite frankly, I hated it and think it was a waste of time.” I nodded to accentuate my point.

A couple of kids clapped, but soon it died down under Mrs. Whitehead’s unceasing gaze. The bitter taste of regret worked its way to the back of my throat. It burned a little like a vurp.

Mrs. Whitehead frowned. “Fair enough. Let’s go over it, then, and maybe you’ll get more out of it.”
Even after talking about it for the next hour, I still didn’t get it. I mean, Mrs. Whitehead seemed to find Billy Budd very enlightening, and if all that was in there, great. I didn’t see it.

Sometimes I wondered if people overanalyzed a book. Maybe the writer didn’t really mean all that stuff, and you saw something that wasn’t meant to be there, ya know? In this case we’d never know. Melville had been dead over two hundred years, so asking him wasn’t really an option.
When the bell rang, I gathered my things quickly, hoping to escape the classroom without confrontation. With her gaze burning a hole in the back of my head, I kept my eyes glued to the floor. I was pretty sure her spectacles magnified her stare, the way the sun’s heat is more intense through a magnifying glass.

I reached up to scratch my scalp, making sure she hadn’t given me a bald spot. I rounded the front row of desks and, by some miracle, made it out into the hall where I disappeared among the sea of bodies.
Once I was a safe distance from Mrs. Whitehead’s room, I leaned against a row of lockers.

One of these days you should really learn to hold your tongue, I thought. I took a deep breath, checked the top of my head one more time, and continued on to my next class: History

About The Author

Let's see. What do you want to know about me? I love apocalypse movies like 2012 (which is probably why my first book is sort of apocalyptic), I love to read, I love my fur babies, my husband and my family.

I'm a graphic designer by trade, but hoping to some day be able to write full time.

Dan, my husband, and I are brand new parents and loving life!

As far as writing goes, The Blackout was my first published novel, but I've been writing for quite awhile. I won honorable mention in the 72nd Annual Writer's Digest Competition for a short story junior year of college, so that was...awhile ago anyway. Although I published a scholarly paper senior year, fiction writing has always been my passion. Can't wait to see what's next!
