Review: When Water Flows Uphill by Beryl Shaw

Title: When Water Flows Uphill
Author: Beryl Shaw
Series: None

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon

Scientist Dr. Armand Croft, a distressed amnesia victim, takes an assignment to import water to Las Vegas from a subterranean aquifer in the north. But northern ringleader Gary Wixx organizes a rancher’s alliance that stops Dr. Croft at every reach. Subsequently, the two men face off and launch an embittered and fierce water war. Meanwhile, Dr. Croft falls in love with a female archeologist who becomes the target of threats that promise to relent if he will forfeit the water grab. Nevertheless, backed by corporate power and sworn to secrecy, he completes his assignment, builds a pipeline, and moves the water south. But an unforeseen terrorist attack changes everything when it destroys a pipeline station, kills a security guard, and leaves Dr. Croft as the FBI’s primary suspect.
When water flows uphill was a stunning read from the very beginning.

The book tells the story of scientist Dr. Armand Croft and his journey to build a pipeline in order to import water to Las Vegas. It may sound easy but it’s definitely not.

Dr. Croft has to deal with not only his amnesia but with obstacles that come along. After Stephanie, the woman he loves is threatened because of his task, Croft is more determined than ever to complete his project. But everything falls apart when an attack destroys the pipeline station, someone is killed and the main suspect is no other than Croft himself.

This was such a journey. I never actually imagined that there was such thing as “water war”. I’m aware of the struggle some countries face in obtaining clean water but it’s hard to think the lengths some people would go to ensure it. I can also admit that Croft and Gary’s ideas were great but I have no idea whether or not they were right.

One thing I didn’t like was the romance aspect. Don’t get me wrong, I love romance but in this case something was missing. I would have liked to see more development in Croft and Stephanie’s relationship. Despite that everything else was great. The topic was a very pressing one, especially in our era, there was a great deal of action and suspense and I loved the twists.

When water flows uphill isn’t something I’d usually read but I really needed a break from the YA and paranormal genre and wanted to focus on something more realistic. This book helped me do that. And the cover guys!!!! You can’t not stare at it!

I totally recommend it!

ARC Review: When Darkness Ends (Guardians of Eternity #12) by Alexandra Ivy

Title: When Darkness Ends
Author: Alexandra Ivy
Series: Guardians of Eternity #12

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | BookDepo

Cyn, the vampire clan chief of Ireland, is an unabashed hedonist whose beauty is surpassed only by his insatiable appetite for pleasure. It’s no wonder he’s furious when he’s transported from the magical land of the pureblooded feys to his desolate private lair—only to have his very existence thrown into a chaos that even he cannot charm his way out of…
Most women may be all but powerless against Cyn, but Fallon, a sharp-witted fairy princess, is less than beguiled by the silver-tongued vampire. She’s a serious soul with no time for the sort of games he plays—especially when they learn that someone is trying to close the veil that separates the dimensions. But seduction may prove the most powerful force of all, as attraction ignites between the unlikely pair even as worlds are colliding around them…
“I’ve waited for you for longer than you could ever possibly imagine”
I think I say this for every Alexandra Ivy book but it feels like I’ve waited forever for this book. I know it hasn’t been that long but every time I’m waiting for a Guardians of Eternity book to come out, time doesn’t seem to pass. I believe that the main reason I feel this way is because I know that I’m going to love the characters and the book. I’, also not a very patient person when it comes to book!

Cyn, the vampire clan chief of Ireland and Fallon, Sally’s sister and the Chatri princess are in a lot of trouble. The Oracles are being manipulated by a strange threat and Siljar demands that Fallon and Cyn find and eliminate the threat before it’s too late. Someone pulls the strings, he wants to control the Oracles and make them cast a spell that will eventually result in the death of all demons. Cyn and Fallon will have to figure out who the threat is or else they all will be doomed.

This was… I have no words! It was just fabulous. It captured my attention from the very beginning and in the end it made me feel nostalgic. Cyn and Fallon were the best couple. Even from the previous book there was something between them that it just couldn’t be ignored. Their competitive relationship, their arrogance and stubbornness, their determination and protectiveness were what captivated me.

Cyn was a great leader but when he was around Fallon he forgot everything. The bond between them was a strong one even if they denied its existence. You could tell they were in sync from the very beginning.

I could go on and on about my love for Cyn and Fallon but I really want to talk about the secondary characters. There were plenty characters from the previous books. Almost every character in the series is mentioned but there were only a few who had an important role in the book. Styx, Viper, Dante even Levet were some of the active secondary characters. We also get to meet Fallon’s fiancé, Magnus. I have to admit that I wasn’t such a huge fan of his in the beginning but as you get to know him better, which you will, you will just love him too. I don’t want to say much about his character but he is more arrogant than Cyn and I think that says a lot.

The end made me feel so nostalgic. I can’t believe that this is the end of the series. The end of the book was perfect, I had no problem with the book I just can’t believe that it’s over. The book totally prepares you for the end of the series but still I can’t say that I’m not sad. I’ve been following this series since the first book came out. I always waited for the next book to be released, always loved the stories and every unique character and now I just can’t let that feeling go. To say that it was an incredible journey would be an understatement!

When Darkness Ends will totally satisfy you. The last book in the Guardians of Eternity series is nothing but perfect. Action- packed, full of suspense, romance, a sexy arrogant, bad-ass alpha hero and an equally stubborn heroine. This book is a must read (actually the whole series is a must read).

Just read it! Highly recommended!

A SORCERESS OF HIS OWN The Gifted Ones Book 1 Dianne Duvall
Expected publication: June 2nd 2015 by Dianne Duvall
From the New York Times bestselling author of the acclaimed Immortal Guardians series comes an enchanting new series full of romance, danger, and loyalty: The Gifted Ones
Since the day Lord Dillon earned his spurs, rumors of his savagery on the battlefield have preceded him into every room, stilling tongues and sparking fear. Weary of battle, he wishes only to find a woman he can wed who will approach him not with fear, but with the tenderness that has been absent from his life for so long. Yet only the wisewoman seems invariably at ease in his presence. Perhaps because she garners the same fear in others that he does himself.
For seven years, Alyssa has been by Lord Dillon's side, counseling him from the shadows, healing him with her hands, and staving off the worst of his loneliness while his fearsome reputation keeps others at bay. Blessed—or cursed—with gifts that label her a sorceress, she is forced to conceal her youth and the love she harbors for him beneath umbral robes that lead Dillon and his people to believe she is the same aged wisewoman who served his father. All is revealed, however, and passions flare when an enemy threatens Dillon's life and Alyssa sacrifices everything to save him. When Dillon discovers that the wisewoman is far from elderly, he is instantly entranced. And, as he and Alyssa work together to defeat an enemy bent on destroying them both, Dillon will risk anything—even the wrath of his king—to be with her.

Excerpt

“This place is unbelievable.” I looked over at him as he stared out the window. “I bet you bring all the girls here.”

“Actually, you’re the first.”

Yep, I was a goner.

“There. Look. A shooting star.” He pointed excitedly.

I caught the end of the blazing trail. “Make a wish.”

“It already came true.” He squeezed my hand.

I didn't think I ever wanted to let it go. It just fit so perfectly with mine, like they were meant to be together. We were meant to be together. I rolled my head to face him while still resting on the headrest. “I like you, Mr. Brandt.”

Instead of answering me, he leaned over the console, causing serious eruptions in my blood. As he got closer, the anticipation had my chest heaving hard for breaths. He reached out and took a lock of hair next to my cheek and stroked it slowly, never losing eye contact. I finally saw that his eyes were a swirl of hazel and green, and his lips only inches from me were a supple red that screamed for mine. His thumb brushed my jawline, causing me to shiver inappropriately. He rested his forehead on mine, trying to control his own urge to jump me.

“I’m going to kiss you, if you’ll let me.” He restrained his whisper.

I couldn't take my eyes off his lips. The words, “Uh-huh,” managed to slip out as we were suspended in air.

He let go of my hair and gripped the back of my neck desperately as he grazed his lips on mine, releasing a gasp from me. I was fully charged and ready to go. I was ready for him to take me to another place. Somewhere I had only read about. A place I never dreamed I would visit.
